Global Flooding

Floods are natural disasters that can occur, causing significant losses in human or animal lives and damage to material property, resulting in heavy losses in areas where floods occur. It also transmits diseases to humans, which is a bad thing that met with the topic of the Covid 19 pandemic in our world now. According to the World Health Organization, our world is now facing great danger due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus, which has caused nearly 5,510,174 deaths so far as of January 12, 2022. With floods that transmit diseases and epidemics, especially in developing countries with no significant resources or support, the matter became difficult, and the issue worsened. Developing countries like Malaysia and India will not be able to face two significant disasters simultaneously. These countries need supplies, masks and prevention methods from Corona and floods. Malaysia floods 2021 contributions to reforms in those countries, especially Malaysia, and taking ways to reduce injuries and deaths in life and property, are very few and slow. In Malaysia, on Monday, December 20, 2021, the authorities evacuated about 51,000 people from their homes, most of them from the state of Pahang, as it is the most affected area. According to the BBC website.

Pictures and videos were circulated on social media of the floods and the rooftops of the houses in which the residents took shelter, where the water leaked. These floods, which occurred in Malaysia, are considered one of the worst floods that this country has witnessed for many years, despite the occurrence of heavy rains every year, causing the homes to sink and the residents to be evacuated. Due to heavy rains and large quantities, the floods in Malaysia cut off the main roads in the state of Selangor, and some people were trapped in their homes and in government shelters, which forced the Malaysian army to distribute food in boats. On the other hand, there was a significant shortcoming on the part of the government, as the opposition directed the responsibility to it. Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaqoub acknowledged the failure of his government to respond to the floods and said that priority should be given to repairing damaged roads to enable the displaced to return to their homes. “The government will provide cash assistance to repair the houses of victims affected by the floods,” prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaqoub said in his Facebook post.

Even Canada, especially British Columbia, was not spared from destructive floods. As we know, the British Columbia region has witnessed massive floods that led to many losses and damages to cities in the past months. It also led to the loss of hundreds of human lives, property, crops and livestock. But soon after, the Canadian government began to take quick decisions and measures that helped overcome this ordeal. The army reinforced the affected areas to help residents evacuate or transport supplies to areas that could not be reached due to roadblocks—coinciding with the damage to infrastructure such as bridges and roads linking economic activity between the cities of British Columbia.

In India, more than 100 deaths were recorded resulting from heavy rains in the state of Uttarakhand, which is located in the north of India. The heavy rains also caused the floods to reach neighbouring countries such as Nepal. Meanwhile, heavy rains flooded highways in Andhra Pradesh, killing 32 people. In Brazil, floods also swept the state of Bahia and Mina in Brazil, where more than 5,300 people were evacuated. About 470,000 were affected by these floods in Bahia, about 3,740 people were displaced. In Spain, two bodies were found due to floods caused by heavy rains that pervaded the area. New studies have shown that people will live in areas prone to floods in the next decade due to climate change, and the countries most affected by these floods are Asia and South Africa. Then the statistics come about the countries of Europe and North America. What do scientists expect about floods in the coming years? Scientists also anticipate a rapid increase in the occurrence of high-tidal floods in 2030, according to a report published a couple of months ago in the journal Nature Climate Change. There are very few quick solutions in developing countries for recoveries, such as clean water, soap, and the correct instructions to avoid diseases. It is challenging to face these disasters, especially in countries already suffering from other humanitarian crises. The outbreak of Covid-19 disease and devastating floods both lead to serious chronic diseases or significant deaths in these places. It is a huge problem that needs to be solved, and the provision of humanitarian assistance is an attempt to alleviate the catastrophic loss of life.
